"Dave Fox's writing is hilarious. It's rare to find a person who has such unique stories to tell and can write about them to boot."

How to Write Extraordinary Travel Journals
(And Still Have Time to Enjoy Your Trip!)

Travel journaling expert Dave Fox will offer a series of lectures and hands-on writing workshops throughout the cruise. All classes will take place when the ship is at sea, so whenever we're in a port of call, you'll have time to get out and explore. We'll kick things off on our first full sea day with an introductory lecture on the basics of great journaling. Then, we'll break up into smaller sessions for hands-on writing experience.

The cruise will include at least six sessions -- two or three large lectures, and three or four smaller workshops. Each smaller workshop session will be offered several times so that class sizes will never exceed 20 to 25 people. Some of the topics Dave will cover include:

Speed Journaling: How to splash lots of detail onto your pages in a short amount of time so you can get your writing done quickly and get out to have more adventures.
Your Inner and Outer Journeys: How foreign surroundings affect our thoughts and emotions, and how to weave together your two parallel journeys as you write.
Successful Storytelling: Choosing the details that really matter, writing them as vividly as possible, and weeding out less important details so your writing stays crisp and interesting.
Journaling Outside the Box: Unique approaches to journaling that highlight the most exciting parts of your trip.

Travel Journaling When You're Not Traveling: How to set the stage before your trip begins, techniques to help you recall past journeys, and why it's never too late to journal about trips you've already taken.

The Psychology of Journaling: How to squash writer's block, elude your inner censor, and decide what to write and what not to write.
Motivation: Integrating journaling with your trip so it enhances your travels in a fun way rather than feeling like a chore.

In Dave's classes, his students express two common frustrations about their past journaling endeavors: Either their journals have sounded like bland, step-by-step accounts of their days, or they've simply not been able to find enough time to write, and given up on their journals because there was so much else to do on their trips. Dave will teach fun and easy techniques to overcome these obstacles.

In addition to the classes, there will be optional drop-in times when you can ask questions or share your writing with other journalers for feedback and critiquing. We'll have a private cocktail party on the first night of the cruise to get to know our group, and a happy hour or two along the way. At the end of the trip, we'll wrap things up with a journaler's open-mic. Share your favorite journal entry, or just come listen to others. And when it's all over, we're going to publish a book!

Each participant will have the opportunity to contribute an essay of 1,000 words or less, about something that happens during the cruise, to be published in a paperback book once the cruise is over. Each participant will receive two free copies of the book, with the option to purchase more. Current plans are to publish the book through Lulu.com, a print-on-demand publisher. Essays should be relevant to the places we visit on the cruise, and must be e-mailed to Dave within one month after the end of the journey. (Sorry, but handwritten or hard-copy submissions cannot be accepted.) Contributing a story for the book is, of course, optional. The books will be available a few months after the trip. (The rest of Dave's travel and tour guiding schedule is not yet known, and will affect when he is able to produce the book. It will be available by the fall of 2009 at the latest, though he hopes to have it done sooner than that, depending on his work schedule.)
